New Year’s Chanting Rises in Popularity
BANGKOK (NNT) - The Ministry of Culture, in partnership with Suan Dusit University, recently conducted a survey revealing an increasing interest among the Thai population in participating in the traditional "New Year’s Eve Chanting" to welcome the year 2024.
The survey, which gathered responses from over 13,000 people from different professions and regions, indicates that 60.40% have previously joined in such activities. However, this year, while 32.96% expressed a keen interest in the activity, as much as 51.27% remained undecided yet open to the possibility.
According to the survey, 60.08% of Thais favor conducting the ritual in major temples or religious sites within their province. In contrast, a significant portion, 38.92%, choose to take part in the activity at home, and 29.40% opt for online platforms.
A considerable 63.79% of respondents believe this religious practice brings auspicious beginnings to the new year for themselves and their families. Others view it as a means of promoting ethical values and linking religious principles to everyday life. Strengthening family relationships and committing to reduce negative behaviors during the festive period are also cited as key motivations.
The survey further highlights that New Year’s Day activities are predominantly centered around traditional practices, with 58.44% of respondents planning to give alms, 43.71% opting to spend time with their families at home, and 42.83% intending to seek blessings from respected elders.
The Culture Ministry is collaborating with the National Office of Buddhism, regional offices, and the private sector to expand the scope of the event and add online participation options. The agency also plans to host a range of cultural programs, such as Thai music and dance performances, working with the Thailand Creative Content Agency.
